WHILE NMB SEA TURTLE PATROL WALKERS ARE OUT WALKING THIS BEAUTIFUL THURSDAY MORNING SEGMENT A WALKERS COME UPON A CRAWL
NMB STP volunteer Brenda makes the calls the NMB STP hotline,
where pictures are sent in. They determine it is a false crawl.
(The Sea Turtle came up on shore but did not nest)
MANY THANKS TO ALL THE NMB AND BRIARCLIFF VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE OUT WALKING EACH AND EVERY MORNING AND TO ALL THE DAY LEADERS
While it is sometimes unknown as to why a Sea Turtle will False crawl, as this can happen naturally. Was she out scouting for the perfect spot to come back later? Did she come to nest and find the sand at this spot not suitable for her nest? Was the sand too hard or too soft? There is so much unknown that study and research may give us answers someday.
But Some of the known reasons for a False Crawl may be due to Human or Wildlife interactions. Artificial beachfront lighting may cause this also. The Sea Turtle is out of her environment when coming to shore she is scared and unprotected. She will want to come to shore for the least amount of time, strait line up to lay her eggs and strait line back to the ocean and to her happy place. The crawl below where you can see she made loops around before returning to the ocean, where she may have been bothered by human or wildlife interactions. These are some of the known reasons that we can make a difference in.
BE THE ONE TO MAKE THE DIFFERENCE TO THIS BEAUTIFUL SEA TURTLE SPECIES. TURN OUTDOOR BEACHFRONT LIGHTS OFF, IF A WINDOW IS FACEING THE OCEAN, PULL THE SHADE. IF OUT AND YOU COME UPON A SEA TURTLE NESTING, LEAVE HER ALONE AND LET HER NEST IN PEACE. NO LIGHTS OR FLASH PHOTOGRPHY EVER.
IF YOU SEE A NESTING TURTLE IN NMB OR BRIARCLIFFE ARES
CALL THE NMB STP HOTLINE
