Inventory on Protected Loggerhead nest #1

Protected Endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtle nest #1 has been inventoried with great inventory results.

The dedicated NMB STP Volunteers walk their assigned sections of the beach every week, Some walking multiple days from May 1st to the middle of August sometimes longer depending on if any crawls or nest that are found later in August.

It's a feeling hard to explain to see the results of the hard work from all of the NMB STP Volunteers as the results from finding and protecting the Endangered Sea Turtle nest.  One step in helping the future survival of the endangered Sea Turtle Species.

This nest incubated for 70 days.

The tracks after the major emergence as the Hatchlings made it out of the nest going into the ocean to start their lives at sea. They will endure many obstacles throughout their lives. Every hatchling that makes it to the ocean will be the hope for the Endangered Sea Turtle Species as many do not make it to adulthood. A special thanks to NMB STP Volunteer Cherie for the pictures. All of her pictures are copyrighted to her.

The cage is taken down that was used to protect this nest from all sharing the beaches with us.

Many NMB STP Volunteers are there to help.  They are excited to share their passion and knowledge with fellow volunteers and all that have come to the inventory.

One live hatchling was found during inventory in the nest that had not been able to make it out of the nest.  The Hatchling is released on the beach to make their way down the beach on its own and is able to make their way from the beach into the deep blue to start his life out to sea.

95% hatch rate

127 eggs were relocated
121 eggs hatched
6 eggs did not hatch and are still whole and unviable: of these 6 eggs:
4 of these eggs were collapsed
2 of these eggs were still very white
1 dead hatchling
1 live hatchling found which was released.

All Sea Turtles are endangered, they are federally, and state protected.  Special training, guidelines and permits are required to do inventories, work with nesting Sea Turtles, nest, Hatchlings and stranded Sea Turtles.

If you encounter a nesting Sea Turtle in NMB or Briarcliffe areas, please call the NMB STP Hotline.
