NMB SEA TURTLE NEST #6 ---INVENTORY

On May 30 NMB nest # 6 was found and protected. This nest was found by walkers in Cherry Grove. This nest had 114 eggs, one was used for DNA testing. This nest incubated for 55 days, emerging very early Sunday morning. Because they emerged on the same day as nest two , this was the second inventory done on Wednesday.

AT THIS NEST THE WIND HAD ADDED MANY INCHES OF SAND ON TOP OF THIS NEST, BUT GREAT NEWS 1 LIVE HATCHLING IS FOUND, STILL IN EGG CHAMBER THAT WAS NOT ABLE TO MAKE IT OUT ON ITS OWN. THIS HATCHLING WILL BE RELEASED WITH THE OTHER 8 FROM THE NEST THAT EMERGED THE SAME NIGHT.

MARY IS TALKING TO THE MANY EXCITED PEOPLE WHO HAVE COME TO SEE THIS INVENTORY.

MANY PEOPLE CAME TO THIS INVENTORY, AND MANY OF THE NMB STP VOLUNTEERS CAME TO HELP, ALL JUMPING IN, ALL SHARING AND TALKING TO THE MANY SPECTATORS COMING TO WATCH THE TWO INVENTORIES.

THE EGGS ARE SEPERATED AND CAREFULLY COUNTED AND DOCUMENTED

IN PREPERATION FOR THE HATCHLINGS, VOLUNTEERS ARE MAKING SURE THE HATCHLINGS HAVE THE SPACE TO MAKE IT TO THE OCEAN, EVERONE CAN OBSERVE, BUT ARE FAR ENOUGH BACK, SO THE HATCHLINGS WILL NOT HAVE ANY INTERFERENCE, JUST AS NATURE INTENDED.

THIS HATCHLING IS ON HIS WAY, HE/SHE WAS RELEASED AT THE SAME TIME AS THE 8 HATCHLINGS FROM NEST #4

INVENTORY RESULTS:
114 eggs, one used for DNA studies
88.5 % Hatch Success Rate

100 hatched shells
13 unhatched or whole eggs shells
1 live hatchling, released on the beach

All Sea Turtles are endangered, they are federally, and state protected, special guidelines, training and permits are required to work with the nesting Sea Turtle mother, nest eggs, hatchlings and strandings.
