2017 April Activity

The new 2017 sea turtle season started early and with a bang.   The call came in early morning on April 4th,  Horry County Sanitation, sea turtle stranded n beach in front of  Sands Dune Club, Arcadian Shores Beach, the northern section of the unincorporated section of Horry County.   Small turtle, appears to be alive.

Quick check, sure enough, small green sea turtle, early in the season, ocean and air temperatures still cold.  Possible cold stun.   NMB STP rushed the turtle to the SC Sea Turtle Care Center in Charleston.

Gill was first dignosed as a cold stun......washed ashore by the weeks strong storms.  But Gill remained leghargic so staff strongly suspected other problems.  On April 20th, Gill passed a 3 inch ong piece of latex balloon.

On August 3, Gill was released off a boat into a salt marsh near Kiwah Island where she will have plenty to eat be be safe from predators and boats.

A huge staff to all who helped this precious turtle

Gill was barely in the car set fro trnasport when call came in about another stranding, about 2 miles on the Briarcliffe Beach.  Same Horry County Sanitation worker came accross the stranding.  This one was not so pretty,  NMB STP Volunteer Matt who had just received his stranding permit, investigated the call and found the badly decomposed remains.
