2011 SEASON Starts with a Loggerhead Stranding

The 2011 Season started early for the NMB Sea Turtle Patrol.   Around 6:30 this morning, a walker reported a dead stranded loggerhead turtle between 10th and 11th Ave N in North Myrtle Beach.  This turtle appeared to be a juvenile, it's carapace measuring 27 1/2 inches from notch to notch and was about 1/3 covered with barnacles. The front flippers were covered with little white barnacles.  No apparent cause of death was found, but the turtle appeared emaciated.  (double click on pictures to enlarge)

A big thanks to the walker who reported the stranding, thanks to Anne H. who gave her my phone number and thanks to Anne B. for helping us.  Rob will be filing the report with SCDNR.
