NMB Nest #7

A call coming into the hotline, while the NMB STP was on their way, the caller was asked to tell people to turn their lights off and leave the turtle alone. NMB STP stayed while she nested, making sure everyone was staying away and anyone walking the beach with lights were asked to turn lights off and go way around her. The beach was dark and quiet, as this mother was able to nest in peace. On her way back to the ocean, measurements were taken 40 inches from notch to tip of the carapace, also a pit scan tag was done with no results showing. The nest was roped off for the night to keep it safe, until the NMB STP could return in the morning.  In the morning probing is done to find the egg chamber.

Once probing was done, the egg chamber is carefully found. This nest is on a busy beach with many bright lights from the budlings, the eggs are relocated to a safer part of the beach.  130 eggs were found in this nest

The nest is protected with a cage.  Poles, rope and a sign indicating that this is a protected endangered Sea turtle nest.  Great job NMB STP out walking this morning and all who are out every day so the nest can be protected.  All making the difference to help save the endangered Sea Turtle Species.

All Sea Turtles are endangered. They are federally protected, Special guidelines, training and permits are required to work with nesting Sea Turtles, Hatchlings or stranded Sea Turtles.
