North Myrtle Beach protected nest number 2

The dedicated Volunteers Walk early mornings, out at sunrise looking for a potential crawl and nest, so it can be protected.  The Volunteers will walk 7 days a week, 11 miles of beaches, as they know this will make the difference in the endangered Sea Turtle Species.

The excitement of the NMB STP walking this morning as the have found a crawl and body pit.

Unfortunately, the body pit has been run over by the new garbage trucks before it was light enough to find this crawl.  some of the signs we would look for in determining where the eggs may have been distorted the tire tracks.

Probing is very carefully done to determine where the egg chamber may be.  All are eagerly waiting to see if this is a nest.

The egg chamber has been found and yes, there are eggs.

This nest is in the middle of the beach and in an unsafe part of the beach.  The nest will be relocated to a safer part of the beach and protected according to state and federal guidelines as all Sea Turtles are endangered.

Poles and rope will be put up around the nest, along with signage indicating that this is a protected Sea Turtle nest

Great job to the NMB STP Volunteers out walking today and all that walk everyday so these nests can be found and protected.  They are making the difference to help save the endangered Sea Turtle Species.

All Sea Turtles are endangered, they are federally, and state protected.  Special guidelines, training and permits are required to work with Nesting Sea Turtles, Hatchlings, Nest and strandings.
