Sea Turtle Nesting started today, Monday May 1st

May 1st marks the Beginning of The Sea Turtle Nesting season in much of South Carolina. The very dedicated and excited NMB STP volunteers start their very important daily walks today. Walking 11 miles of beaches from Briarcliffe to NMB. The Volunteers go out rain or shine (unless it is unsafe weather), at sunrise.  Each day a different group of Volunteers go out, although there are several that volunteer on more than 1 day.

When a nest is found it will be protected, a cage will be put around it to protect it from predators, as we all need to share the beaches.  The nest will also be roped off and signage will be put up so everyone knows it is a protected Sea Turtle Nest. This is all done under special permits and training, as all Sea Turtles are endangered and federally protected.

Here are some Volunteers out on this very first Morning.  and yes, even in the rain the smiles are still there.

Thanks for this picture April

So now that the Endangered Sea Turtle nesting season has started, we can all help by doing these things.

keep beachfront lights off, if a window is facing the oceans pull the shades.
Fill in all holes before leaving the Beach.
Pick up everything you went to the beach with, leave only your footprints.
If out at night and feel you need to use a flashlight, please try to use a Turtle safe Red lens flashlight.
If you see a nesting Sea Turtle please stay away and let her nest in peace, no lights, flashlights or flash photos.

If in NMB or Briarcliffe and see a nesting or stranded Sea turtle, please call the NMB STP Hotline

843-213-9074

ANY TIME DAY OR NIGHT

All Sea Turtles are endangered, special training and permits are required to work with Nesting Sea Turtle Mothers, Nest, and stranded Sea Turtles
