NMB SEA TURTLE NEST # 8 THURSDAY JUNE 9th

A unique morning, a call coming into the NMB STP Hotline about a Sea Turtle that had nested on the beach in front of their house around 2:30 am. All Thursday NMB STP Volunteers are out walking at sunrise, all looking for potential crawls, as they can be anywhere along the 11 miles of beach that they walk every day. Today being more difficult as wind is making crawls harder to see. While NMB STP volunteers Diane and Erica are walking this section of the beach, they meet up with NMB STP volunteers Linda and Arlene at the crawl and body pit.

Checking out where this nest may be, as the only signs of the crawl are in the soft sand before the body pit.  The wind has erased any signs of the crawl leading a leading up to the body pit.

Erica Talking with and educating the very nice and curious group of people walking on the beach.

Chuck probed and found the egg cavity
Linda has carefully dug into the nest and yes, eggs are found!!!!

This mother has laid her eggs in the perfect spot, up to the dunes and away from lights. This nest is left in situ, left just as it is. One egg was taken for DNA studies. Don and Kim put the cage and poles around the nest to protect this nest from anything sharing the beach with us.

SO MANY THANKS TO ALL THE NMB STP VOLUNTEERS AND DAY LEADERS OUT WALKING THIS MORNING AND EVERY MORNING LOOKING FOR POTENTIAL CRAWLS AND NEST.  ALL MAKING THE DIFFERENCE IN THIS ENDANGERED SEA TURTLE SPECIES.

ALL SEA TURTLES ARE ENDANGERED, THEY FEDERALLY AND STATE PROTECTED.
